Romantic Honeymoon Destinations in Mexico

You’ve finally got a wedding date set and have been slowly getting together all of the details for it. But what about the honeymoon? If you’ve been thinking about Mexico, we can’t help but agree: It’s the perfect blend of culture, beautiful eco parks and beaches, and romantic spots! But with so many places to go and things to do, you might be wondering which location is best for you.

We’re sharing some of the top areas to consider below. As you’ll see, no matter which you choose, you can’t go wrong!

Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas makes up half of the area known as “Los Cabos” (the other half is San José del Cabo). Cabo San Lucas (also known as Land’s End) is perfect for a honeymoon trip because it has more than enough beaches to explore plus incredible places for scuba diving locations, whale watching, and deep-sea fishing.

If you like to see local artisans at work, visit The Glass Factory where you’ll learn how to shape glass into vases, small status and other items. And, for those of you who love golf, you’ll love being in Cancun which is considered the golf capital of Latin America with golf courses designed by golf legends Tiger Woods and Jack.

The Marina in Downtown Cabo has exciting clubs and lounges as well as some of the best restaurants that offer the best taste of local cuisine and seafood. It’s also the area you’ll want to go to take boat tours including those glass bottom boat tours. The area also offers two other famous hotspots worth seeing: El Arco and Lover’s Beach.

El Arco is a natural rock formation at the tip of the Baja Peninsula. Sea lions love the area so you may see some lounging on the beach on your trip. Lover’s Beach is equally impressive and can only be accessed via a boat or water taxi. The waves and currents of the Pacific make it dangerous to swim here so go for the romantic scenery. Pack a meal to bring with you as there are no restaurants here.

San José del Cabo is a quieter town. You’ll find art galleries, stores selling beautiful clothing and jewelry that are all hand-crafted. And while Cabo San Lucas has larger all-inclusive resorts, San José del Cabo is better known for smaller hotels which gives a more intimate and authentic feel during your stay.

Cancun

If some of the must-have items on your dream honeymoon itinerary include eating at excellent restaurants, enjoying an evening out at a nightclub, or going on outdoor adventures, you’ll want to consider staying in Cancun. It’s a city full of energy so it’s perfect for the couple who wants to take in all of the excitement. Balanced with all of that energy is the beautiful natural surroundings. You’ll find white sand beaches and turquoise blue waters and eco parks as well.

Cancun is close to most other popular attractions so you can do many day trips to other areas and local historic sites very easily. Visit Playa del Carmen from here to go on a jungle tour or go to the ancient Mayan city, Chichén Itzá which is one of the new wonders of the world. Tulum, an archeological site, is also close by Cancun. It’s known for the underground river that many people like to see for a swim.

If you decide to stay in Cancun, make sure to take a day trip to Isla Mujeres, an island with a more local, small-town charm. You can rent a golf cart to explore the island on your own including popular spots such as Punta Sur which has cliff-side sculpture gardens and the local Turtle Farm in Tortugranja.

Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta boasts cobblestone streets, vibrant local art galleries, fantastic shopping and to-tier restaurants. The best place to access all of these and more is to visit the Malecon, an 11-block long beachfront promenade that has local vendors and plenty of dining options. Go here in the evening for an especially romantic walk as you take in the ocean’s sounds, the sand sculptures and listen to the music of the buskers in the street.

We also recommend a visit to Vallarta Botanical Gardens where you’ll see a vibrant blend of wildflowers, orchids and marigolds all on 65 acres of beautiful land. While you’re in Puerto Vallarta, make sure to sign up for a dinner cruise to savor the ocean views as you have a romantic meal for two.

You can also sign up to see the live show called Rhythms of the Night which includes a boat cruise where the destination will be Las Caletas. There, you’ll enjoy a cultural show that shares stories of the ancient civilizations that lived in Mexico as well as traditional Mexican tales. The show has all the theatrics, stunts, and excitement of Cirque de Soleil with live music, dancing, fire-twirlers, contortionists. It also includes a buffet meal.

You can also take a day trip to Sayulita which is 25 miles away from Puerto Vallarta. It’s known for being the perfect place for surfing, snorkeling, fishing and jungle tours. It also has boutique shops and art so you will be able to find the perfect hand-crafted item to take home.

Playa Del Carmen

Playa del Carmen has some outstanding restaurants that serve authentic Mexican cuisine. It’s where you go to shop but it’s also close to three very popular parks: Xcaret, Xel-Há and Xplor. Xcaret is just six miles away and you’ll want to go to see many cultural sites as well as beautiful wildlife. Don’t miss the Mexican Folk Art Museum, the popular Mayan archeological sites, the Coral Reef Aquarium, the Butterfly Pavilion and the Island of Jaguars.

Xplor is just minutes from Xcaret so many people like to visit these two places together. It’s the perfect place to go if you want excitement and adventure. It offers zip-line tours, cave explorations, and a chance to check out underwater rivers all using an amphibious ATV. Xel-Há Park offers beautiful coves and cenotes to enjoy so snorkeling is a top activity to try here.

If you’d rather take in even more natural scenery, try visiting the jungle there. You’ll be able to do so by bike for a truly unforgettable ride! And if you love the water, they also offer you the opportunity to float down the river there in an inner tube. There’s really something here among these three parks for any couple.
